“Drowsy, Distracted or Focused —Your Decisions Drive Your Safety” is the theme of this year’s event.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, driver behavior is the critical reason attributed to 94% of traffic crashes in the United States. Vehicle-related critical reasons account for 2%, environmental-related reasons account for 2%, and 2% of crashes are due to unknown critical reasons.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration identified the 94% of driver-related errors as recognition, decision, performance, and non-performance errors:
- 41% – Recognition Errors
- driver inattention
- internal and external distractions
- inadequate surveillance
- 33% – Decision Errors
- driving too fast for conditions
- too fast for a curve
- false assumption of others’ actions
- illegal maneuver
- misjudgment of gap or others’ speed
- 11% – Performance Errors
- overcompensation
- poor directional control
- 7% – Non-Performance Errors
- drowsiness, etc.
- 8% – Other
