With 7,271 violations, “Fall Protection-General Requirements” topped the agency’s list of most frequently cited violations in fiscal year 2023. OSHA regional administrator Eric Harbin announced the list at the recent National Safety Congress & Expo.
An OSHA violation occurs when an employer breaks the standards set by the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSH) by failing to provide a safe workplace for their workers.
Other prominent violations included Hazard Communication, Ladders, Scaffolding, and Powered Industrial Trucks. Notably, many of these violations were found to be prevalent in the roofing industry. The complete Top 10 list:
- Fall protection—general requirements: 7,271 violations
- Hazard communication: 3,213 violations
- Ladders: 2,978 violations
- Scaffolding: 2,859 violations
- Powered industrial trucks: 2,561 violations
- Lockout/tagout: 2,554 violations
- Respiratory protection: 2,481 violations
- Fall protection—training requirements: 2,112 violations
- Personal protective and lifesaving equipment—eye and face protection: 2,074 violations
- Machine guarding: 1,644 violations
