Summer is here, let’s stay safe out there.
According to NOAA, for the past two decades (with the exception of 2009 and 2004) summers have been hotter than average. The summers of 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2016 all fall within the top 10 hottest summers of the past 123 years.
With summer temperatures predicted to be hotter than normal again this year, it’s more important than ever to consider and plan for outdoor worker safety.
OSHA reports that thousands of workers fall ill from occupational heat exposure — heat stress, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke — each year. If not treated immediately, heat stroke can lead to death. These heat-related illnesses are preventable. The basic guidelines for employers:
- provide workers with water, rest, and shade
- gradually increase workloads and allow more frequent breaks for new or returning workers
- educate workers about the symptoms of heat-related illnesses and how to prevent them
- wear light, loose-fitting breathable garments
- drink small amounts of water frequently–about a quart per hour
- avoid caffeine, alcohol, and excessive sugar–may cause dehydration
- certain medications may affect ability to handle heat – check with your doctor
Workers should remember:
When you choose the Tri-State/Service Group, you’re partnering with an experienced and safe roofing contractor. Our groups hold regular meetings with a full safety agenda that includes best practices for preventing, and if necessary, responding to heat-related illnesses. Through our “Working. Safe.” program, we are always working to improve safety performance and minimize risks like these each day–with a zero injury and illness goal.
