Building safety codes address structural stability, roof systems, fire safety, exits, sanitation, electricity, energy efficiency, flood protection, and more in all buildings — protecting public health, safety and welfare through their effective enforcement.
Established by the International Code Council (ICC) and celebrated each year in May, Building Safety Month promotes awareness of the importance of building codes in creating safe and sustainable structures.
According to the ICC, the International Codes
- Are innovative and coordinated.
- Cannot be influenced by vested financial interests.
- Are efficient and effective.
- Are developed through the efforts of public safety officials.
- Are up to date and state of the art.
- Are updated every three years.
- Are economically viable and practical.
